Lady Jags set to face Dominica tomorrow

Lady Jags storm into action Wednesday evening against Dominica, in what will be the team’s first international engagement for 2022.

Lady Jags warm-up ahead of sessions at the GFF National Training Centre

With the overseas-based Lady Jags only having arrived in Guyana last Saturday, February 16, they have been blending well ahead of Wednesday’s fixture against Dominica.

“You’re going to see us assess the players here,”

Joseph said.

“We’ve got 36 players in the camp and the talent is pretty deep. You’re going to see us try to sort out the players who play in the best positions, who have the right chemistry, and move that 36 down to 23 players and then our starting eleven.”

This CONCACAF qualifier match for Guyana’s national women’s football team takes place at the Leonora Track and Field Facility, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

This begins their journey on the road to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Then the Lady Jags will jet out to the Turks and Caicos Islands, where they will take on the Turks and Caicos national women’s team at their National Academy for their first away game of the year.

Based on the fact that the Lady Jags are in Group F of the competition along with Dominica, Turks and Caicos Islands, Trinidad and Tobago and Nicaragua, they will have home and away assignments against the latter two teams in several weeks’ time.

Head Coach Ivan Joseph puts his players through their paces ahead of the Concacaf clash against Dominica at Leonora on Wednesday

“Dominica are a formidable team,”

Head Coach Ivan said.

“The video that we've been able to see from them is from 2018, but they are strong, they're physical and they can play football.”

With six groups in the CONCACAF Women’s Qualifiers competition, the top finisher from each group will gain automatic qualification to the CONCACAF Women’s Championships.

The US and Canadian Women’s teams have already qualified for the tournament based on their regional ranking.

The Women’s Championships will act as CONCACAF’s Qualifier for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 2023 and the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.
