Human Services Minister meets Palms staff, pushes accountability and better care

Minister of Human Services and Social Security Dr. Vindhya Persaud on Tuesday met with nurses, supervisors, and the administrative team of the Palms Geriatric Home on Brickdam as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen accountability, improve working conditions, and ensure a high standard of care for residents.
Permanent Secretary Dr. Erica Forte also attended the meeting, which focused on issues affecting the operation of the facility and the welfare of its elderly residents.

During the engagement, Minister Persaud addressed concerns surrounding staff attendance, stressing the importance of reliability and teamwork in maintaining quality care at the home.
She also underscored the need for residents to consistently receive proper attention, good hygiene, and nutritious meals.
At the same time, the minister listened to challenges raised by staff and outlined a number of measures that will soon be introduced to improve the facility’s operations and provide greater support for nurses.
According to the ministry, the planned improvements are intended to create a more efficient and comfortable working environment, with benefits for both staff and residents.
The engagement forms part of the ministry’s broader commitment to transparency, responsiveness, and the continuous improvement of care at the Palms.
Following the meeting, Minister Persaud also inspected ongoing works at the facility to ensure that each project remains on track.
