A tug and barge working on the new Demerara Harbour Bridge drifted into the existing structure on Sunday, causing “minimal interference” with traffic flow.

Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill, who is currently on site, said the incident occurred at about 19:30h.

According to the Minister, the tug and barge drifted and collided with four buoys and two pontoons on the southern side of the Harbour Bridge.

“This moment, all of our various teams are mobilised,” the Minister noted, adding, “it has not put the Demerara Harbour Bridge out of service.”

He added that the retraction to allow for vessels to cross, which is scheduled for tomorrow at 4:00h, will occur.

The Minister said laden trucks are being released at intervals to ensure the weight does not further compromise the bridge.

“There is no need for any public outcry or alarms,” Edghill emphasised, noting that an investigation will be launched in the morning to ascertain what transpired and to mitigate any future occurrence.
