Top players for Table Tennis Nationals have shot at national team

The Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is set to host their National championship later this month with plans to evaluate players for a national team.

The National Table Tennis Championships are slated for January 21st to 29th for junior and senior players at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall from December 21st to 29th.

There will also be cash prizes awarded top novice and senior players at the conclusion of the tournament.

“With the absence of school in the last quarter, there wasn’t much we could have done in terms of continuing the school programme. The hope is still to look at the novices’ category.” noted GTTA President Godfrey Munroe.

He is seeking to unearth new talent and shortlist persons from here for the soon to be launched nursery academy.

Registration for the tournament is currently ongoing and will be completed, along with tournament draws, prior to the start of the championship.

A number of top players are expected to compete, including Olympian Chelsea Edghill who will be coming home to Guyana for the highly anticipated event.

Munroe expects keen competition once the tournament begins; “As we know we have the young keen players who are keen on registering their performances against the senior counterparts."

"We have the likes of Jonathan Van Lange, Miguel Wong and those players. We have the old players; Shemar Britton, Christopher Franklin and the others who would basically be looking to hold their ground and their position in the senior ranks.” he added.

National team selection will be conducted shortly after this championship.
