There has been an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalisation - Health Minister

...3 samples from the recent deaths to be sent to CARPHA

Minister of Health, Dr. Frank Anthony, on Thursday, said that there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalisation.

Speaking during his daily COVID-19 Update, Minister Anthony noted that medical personnel are on high alert and is ready to deal with these cases.

“Over the last week, we have seen an increase, gradual increase in cases but there is an increase in cases, and we have seen an increase in hospitalisation,” Minister Anthony noted.

Moreover, for the week thus far, three persons have died as a result of COVID-19. The overall death toll stands at 1,287.

The Health Minister revealed that the samples from these persons would be sent to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to see which variant is causing these deaths.

“If we compare October with this month November, in October, we probably have our best month for the year, we had 0 Covid deaths. We had 87 cases overall for the month of November. In November this year, we already have 3 deaths, and we have 107 cases so far.”

Meanwhile, the Minister noted that over the past 24h, two persons tested positive for the deadly virus after a total of 140 tests were conducted.

This has taken the total number of active cases to 102 countrywide. There are 10 persons hospitalised and out of that, four are receiving medical treatment in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

To this end, Dr. Anthony said the discovery was made that vaccines are only operable for 4-6 months and encourage all Guyanese to take their booster shots in order to protect themselves.

“Again, the people who are more vulnerable are those persons who are older, so if you fall into that category, make sure come and get your booster doses”
