Taxi driver charged with murder of ‘best friend’

L-R: Troy Griffith and Quincy Weekes

Twenty-eight-year-old Troy Griffith, who is accused of murdering his best friend over $500 change, was remanded to prison on Monday.

Griffith, a taxi driver of Lot 6 ‘B’ Carol’s Place Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was arraigned before Magistrate Sunil Scarce in the Diamond/ Grove Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on September 14, 2022, at Mocha Access Road and Providence Public Road, EBD, he murdered Quincy Weekes, called ‘Balu.’

After listening to the facts, Magistrate Scarce remanded the taxi driver and adjourned the matter to November 18 for report and statements.

Police had reported that Weekes, 41, and Griffith had a misunderstanding over $500 sometime back.

However, on the day in question, Weekes and Griffith were plying their trade when an argument started between them over parking their respective cars.

It was then that the suspect armed himself with a knife and dealt Weekes several stab wounds about his body.

The 41-year-old taxi driver collapsed, and Emergency Medical Technicians pronounced him dead on the scene. He was seen with four stab wounds.
