Soldier remanded for killing Canje Hairdresser

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) rank who is accused of killing 29-year-old Donalisa Park was remanded to prison when he appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.


Collin Hazel of Courtland Village, Corentyne, was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to him by Magistrate Renita Singh.


The allegation is that between June 29 and June 30, at Courtland Village, Corentyne, he murdered the 29-year-old hairdresser of East Canje Berbice. The matter was transferred to the Albion Magistrate Court on August 23.


At about 13:00h on Wednesday last, the young mother of one left her home to visit the suspect at his Corentyne home to uplift a quantity of cleaning detergent but was not seen or heard from after.


Her uncle, Mortimer Amsterdam, told reporters he received information that a body was found on the Corentyne. Family members visited the location where they discovered that the body was that of their relative.


She was discovered opposite the house where she was expected to uplift the items. The body was then taken to the Port Mourant Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
