Wayne Baker defeated top Junior player Gerald Scotland in straight sets to earn the U18 men’s title in the ongoing Sheltez Junior Tennis Tournament.

The tournament began earlier this month with intense competition between male and female local tennis players of all ages and skill levels.

So far, the boys U14 category has been concluded with Nathan DeNobrega of Rebel Tennis Club earning that title.

Renola Jordan won the girls U16 title. Paula Kalekyezi emerged as the winner of the girls U14 category.

Most recently, a tense showdown ensued between top junior men Gerald Scotland and Wayne Baker.

National Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan

This is according to National Coach Shelly Daly-Ramdyhan: “The match over the weekend was the boys 18’s finals. It was won by Wayne Baker, one of our top juniors who hasn’t been playing tennis for a while. But, he managed to bounce back into tennis a few months ago and he was abroad at the (Bill Adams International Tennis Academy, USA) for a few months prior to coming back home and playing in the tournament.”

“It was him and the current top Junior Gerald Scotland. They played in the finals. Very good match.”

As of now, all U18 events have been completed.

Sheltez is expecting a Surinamese contingent of U12 players before they bring the curtain down on the event.

Coach Daly-Ramdyhan had previously said she hopes for more opportunities for players to compete overseas, noting the exceptional talent being displayed locally.

The most recent international engagement for the club’s players was when they were granted an opportunity to compete in October last year where they performed credibly.
