Preliminary works for the construction of the government’s office complex at the new Eccles/Haags Bosch roundabout, East Bank Demerara (EBD), have been completed.

This is according to Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill as he responded to oral questions posed by Opposition Parliamentarian Annette Ferguson during the 81 sitting of the National Assembly.

“The entire site has already been cleared [and] tons upon tons of truckload of sand have already been done for the landfilling. All of the geotechnical bores have already been completed, the soil sampling has already been completed,” the Public Works Minister told the House on Thursday.

He added that the mobilisation of equipment is on-site, and the contractor has already submitted a new design and layout for the new location.

Initially, the complex was set for Eccles/ Mandela but shifted to Eccles/Haags Bosch roundabout after more acreage of land became available. The new design and layout are awaiting the approval of the supervisory consultant.

“We have already gone out on the market to get the best possible skill to supervise the work that is being done,” the Minister stated, adding, “We are very well advanced on this project at this time.”

Already, $6.6 billion has been expanded on the project, which included a $2.6 billion mobilisation advance. The complex, which will be built on 20 acres of land, will feature four towers that can hold approximately 6,000 staff.

The complex is intended to increase efficiency by consolidating government agencies into one location, thereby improving the delivery of services.

Caribbean Green Building Inc. is the project contractor. The overall cost of the project is $15.8 billion.
