Players awarded in World Badminton Day Tournament

The Guyana Badminton Association’s World Badminton Day Tournament concluded on Saturday last with a number of players rewarded for exceptional performances.


The Badminton Association held a tournament between club participants and students of the Sport Ministry’s Nursery Badminton Academy.


The International Badminton Federation (IBF), as it was originally named (now Badminton World Federation – BWF), was established on July 5, 1934, with nine founding Member Associations.


In recognition of this significant date in badminton’s history, World Badminton Day will be celebrated annually on July 5, with various activities and events around the world.


Players who won the various divisions are as follows:

U-11 Girl’s Singles: Eva Bowling

U-11 Boy’s Singles: John Thomas

U-15 Girl’s Singles: Mishka Beharry

U-15 Boy’s Singles: Aiden Bhagwandin

U-19 Girl’s Singles: Mishka Beharry

U-19 Boy’s Singles: Matthew Beharry

U-23 Girl’s Singles: Priyanna Ramdhani

U-23 Boy’s Singles: Akili Haynes

Open Women Doubles: Priyanna Ramdhani & Ambika Ramraj

Open Men Doubles: Marlon Chung & Jonathan Mangra


Top local female badminton player Priyanna Ramdhani was presented a special award for her Academic Excellence, graduating with a 3.8 GPA overall in Business Management/Sports Management Major.


Guyana’s badminton representatives at this year’s Commonwealth Games, Narayan and Priyanna Ramdhani are currently training for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
