The distribution of the ‘Because We Care’ cash grant and school uniform and supplies vouchers will begin on August 2 and Education Minister Priya Manickchand said that so far over 180,000 envelopes of the $30,000 grant have been packed.
“Very pleased to let you know that, we have packed at a Bank 180,594 envelopes of $30,000 each,” the subject Minister said in a Facebook post.
This will amount to some $5.4 billion dollars going back into the pockets of parents and guardians of nursery to secondary school aged children.
Parents or guardians will receive $25,000 in cash and $5,000 in a uniform and supplies voucher, amounting to $30,000.
The ‘Because We Care’ cash grant was introduced in 2014 but was discontinued in 2015 by the APNU+AFC Government. After assuming back office in 2020 the PPP/C administration reintroduced the grant and committed to increase it to $50,000 over the five year term.
They have also extended this grant to private school students. Over 200,000 students are expected to benefit from this initiative.
