Naomi Osaka off to a winning start in Australia Open title defence

Naomi Osaka has now won 19 of her 21 first-round matches at a Grand Slam with a dominant opening win at the Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

Japan's Naomi Osaka opened her defence of the Australian Open title with a dominant win over Colombia's Camila Osorio on day one in Melbourne.

Osaka, seeded 13th, is returning to Grand Slam action after taking a four-month break at the end of last season to protect her mental health.

The four-time Grand Slam champion will play American world number 54 Madison Brengle in round two on Wednesday.

Osaka has won 23 of her past 24 matches in Melbourne.

American Sofia Kenin, who won the title in 2020, suffered an early exit for the second year in a row as she was beaten by Madison Keys.

American teenager Coco Gauff, who beat Venus Williams and Naomi Osaka to reach the Australian Open fourth round when only 15 in 2020, was also eliminated on the opening day.

The Australian Open continues until January 30th at Melbourne Park. (BBC Sport)
