Members of International COI into Guyana’s 2020 election to be named by Tuesday – Pres. Ali

President, Irfaan Ali

President Irfaan Ali on Thursday revealed that the panellists for the International Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into Guyana’s 2020 election fiasco would be named “before the dawn of Tuesday.”

The Head of State made the announcement at the commemoration of the 74th Anniversary of the Enmore Martyrs, which was held at the Enmore Monument Square, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

“Those who subvert democracy and those who cannot present their SOPs and those who struggle against the will of the people, the COI will set the truth free,” the Head of State posited.

The President in 2020 emphasised that there needs to be a COI into the elections while stressing that the individuals responsible for trying to demolish democracy must be held accountable.

It also aims to address areas of weaknesses that can be used to strengthen Guyana’s electoral system.

The 2020 elections, which were marred by controversy, saw officials from the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) attempting to keep the A Partnership For National Unity + Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) in power.

A number of GECOM officials are already before the courts facing misconduct in public office charges.
