Man, who attempted to rape woman, 22, remanded to prison

Charged: Ajay Gaj

Thirty-year-old Ajay Gaj, who attempted to rape a 22-year-old woman last Friday, was charged and remanded to prison on Wednesday.

Gaj, a fisherman of Plastic City, Jetty Squatting Area, West Coast Demerara (WCD), was hauled before Magistrate Faith Mc Gusty in the Wales Magistrate's Court, and a charge of committing an offence with the intent to commit a sexual offence was read him.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, and the case was adjourned to July 25.

Reports are that at about 23:30h on the day in question, the victim was walking in a street when she was confronted by Gaj, who allegedly threatened her with a knife and attempted to drag her into a nearby yard.

During the ordeal, the victim, who put up a fight, managed to bite the suspect's tongue as he was attempting to kiss her.

After being bitten by the woman, the accused made good his escape in an unknown direction. A report was made to the Vreed-En-Hoop Police Station, and the 30-year-old fisherman was arrested in a bushy area, a short distance from his residence.
