Kilcoy fisherman on trial for murdering ex-friend

L-R: Arjune Mohabir and John Alexander Yap

Twenty-five-year-old Arjune Mohabir, who is accused of murdering his friend in 2020, is currently facing trial before Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Berbice High Court.

Mohabir, a fisherman of Lot 80 Kilcoy Squatting Area, Corentyne, is accused of murdering John Alexander Yap, also of Kilcoy Village, at a Superbet location two streets away from his house on September 14, 2020.

In 2020, the accused was hauled before Magistrate Peter Hugh in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court and slapped with the murder charge. He was later committed to stand trial in the High Court.

Attorney at Law Cicelia Corbin is leading the trial before Justice Sewnarine-Beharry, while Attorney at Law Arud Gossai is representing Mohabir.

Reports are that Yap and Mohabir, who were former friends, were involved in an argument outside a Superbet outlet at Kilcoy Village.

During the argument, Yhap of Lot 84 Kilcoy, Corentyne, sustained three stab wounds and was rushed to Port Mourant Public Hospital and later referred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he succumbed.

A post-mortem examination had revealed that the father of two died as a result of the stab wound he sustained to his chest.
