Houston man on $200,000 bail over shooting of longtime friend
A 34-year-old contractor from Houston, East Bank Demerara (EBD), has been hauled before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for allegedly shooting his friend of 20 years.
Daniel Spellen made an appearance before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty and was charged with discharging a loaded firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Kevin Saul.
During his appearance, the defendant denied the charge when it was read to him.
The Court heard that the incident occurred on Freeman Street, East La Penitence, Georgetown, on October 21, 2024, when Spellen, Saul, and several others were socialising.
During the socialisation, Saul claimed he noticed Spellen handling a firearm, and when questioned whether the gun was loaded, he assured him it was not.
However, it was not long after Saul heard a loud explosion and felt a burning sensation in his right leg. An injured Saul was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital with a minor wound and was discharged almost two weeks later.
The defendant was granted $200,000 bail, with the condition that he report daily to the East La Penitence Police Station. The case will continue on November 27, 2024.
