Guyana set to become first Caribbean nation to host an Inter-Schools Kayaking Competition

Ten schools are set to compete in the historic ‘Inter-schools Kayaking Competition’ as part of the Linden Town Week Celebrations.

Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours are set to host the first-ever ‘Inter-Schools Kayaking competition’ during Linden Town week.

The event has been fully endorsed by the Ministry of Education.

All Secondary schools in Linden, as well as two guests “Top schools” from Georgetown, namely; Queens College and St. Rose’s High, will be competing for the title of Kayaking Champion 2022.

The event will be officially launched on Friday, April 29 at the Watooka Guest Lounge where an exciting “Exhibition Race” will be showcased.

The competition begins on Monday, May 2 at 10:00 hours, with the starting point at the Egbert Benjamin Hall and Finish Line at the Watooka Guest House. This will be followed by a brief presentation of awards and cash prizes.

Four-person teams from each school will be racing in three categories for trophies and cash prizes which will be awarded to the top 3 schools overall and the individual top 3 kayakers for each category.

There will be male, female and relay categories. The relay category involves a sprint from Alumina Plant to Egbert Benjamin, tagging their partner who will then kayak to Watooka Guest House.

Safety will be prioritised at the event where professional lifeguards will be on duty, lifejackets will be worn by all participants and a medical evacuation team and first responders will be present in speedboats on the water.

Regional education officials along with physical education teachers from each respective school will be accompanying the students.

Never before has there been a competition of this nature connecting sports, eco-tourism and education which promotes healthy competitive attitudes amongst athletes.
