Guyana for the first time will be hosting Cricket Carnival which is a combination of cricket and carnival activities.
The activities will last for two weeks and will be a major tourist attraction, according to Director (Ag) of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA) Kamrul Baksh.
Mr Baksh told News Update that to accommodate the influx of visitors, several initiatives are being pursued for non-traditional accommodations.
“So one is to have cruise ships come here and convert it into this whole party setting, party mode, two we are pursuing quite aggressively a programme with AirBnB where we can enlist a lot more of property here so that persons can benefit from the marketing and drive of the platform itself and if we can get several homeowners to partner with this project it will go well for us.”
The Director (Ag) also posited that this venture will help businesses to recover post-covid as it will stimulate economic development for businesses within the tourism and hospitality sector.
“So this event conceptualized by his Excellency will greatly alleviate this economic strain as we are starting to incrementally come out of this pandemic, events are a great way to help boost the economic earning for the supply,” he said.
This Cricket Carnival will be the first of its kind and activities start on September 16.
President Irfaan Ali who had made the announcement promised that the two weeks will be interesting and that activities will showcase Guyana’s unique culture and diversity.
The activities include a Guyana Night, President’s Cup Horse race, Regional Food Festival and Regional Monarch competition.
