GDF boxers maintain stronghold on amateur boxing in Guyana

The Guyana Defence Force boxing gym has shown their excellence in amateur boxing by successfully defending their status as the best gym in the National Novices Championships.

The Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis National Novices Championships saw three days of intense rivalry between young boxers across the country, concluding on Sunday June 26 at the National Stadium.

The GDF gym, which was adjudged best gym at the previous edition of the event in 2019, were again victorious.

Terrence Poole, Technical Director within the Guyana Boxing Association who coached the GDF boxers noted that the young men he trained would have displayed much determination and as such it was rewarding to see the gym once again dominate this competition.

Poole said, “Most of them would be based out of town so they would have to spend the entire week away from home just for training to get themselves up to standard for the competition. It was good getting five titles out of the twelve. I think that was very satisfying for us.”

He added that the Novices revealed tremendous potential in the up-and-coming generation of boxers.

“You find a lot of new young talents coming out from this because this is the launching pad. Novices is where you start your first competition from. That’s where you look to see where your talents will be in the future.”

Boxers preparing to represent Guyana at the Commonwealth games in Birmingham, England next month were also able to play some exhibition matches at the event.
