Police probe death of man in custody at Cove and John Station

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Jordan Payne, 30, of South Haslington, East Coast Demerara, who died on Tuesday, March 24, 2026 about 00:10hrs after he became unresponsive while in custody at the Cove and John Police Station, East Coast Demerara.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Payne was in custody in relation to a domestic violence matter. He had earlier complained of feeling unwell and was escorted for medical attention, where he was seen and treated by a doctor on duty at the Enmore Regional Hospital before returning to the station. Further reports indicate that while in custody, he again complained of feeling unwell and subsequently became unresponsive.
He was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.
No marks of violence were observed on the body, which is presently at the Enmore Regional Hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Investigations are ongoing.
