Friends arrested at roadblock for disorderly behaviour charged, released on bail

L-R: Paul Daby, Alpha Poole and Sherwayne De Abreau

Three of the four men who were seen in a video verbally abusing ranks at a roadblock on the Diamond Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD), have been charged and released on bail.

Paul Daby, Sherwayne De Abreau, and Alpha Poole were hauled before Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce in the Diamond Magistrates’ Court and charged with several offences. A fourth friend, Deion Jerrick, who was arrested with the men, was not charged.

Notwithstanding, Daby was charged with disorderly behaviour, motor vehicle obstruction, and five counts of abusive language. He pleaded not guilty and was granted bail of $30,000.

De Abreau and Poole were both charged with disorderly behaviour and five counts each of abusive language. They also pleaded not guilty and were granted bail of $50,000 each. The case was adjourned to May 31, 2024.

MTV News Update reported that at about 21:15h on Monday, ranks were conducting a roadblock exercise on Diamond Public Road when a land cruiser bearing registration number PAE 528 was stopped.

Daby was identified as the driver. He allegedly stopped his vehicle in the middle of the road, preventing the free flow of traffic.

It was further alleged that Daby and his three friends: Jerrick, De Abreau, and Poole, became verbally abusive towards the police officers and proceeded to behave in a disorderly manner, which resulted in a crowd gathering.

According to the Police Force, the ranks continued to carry out their duties, and the men and the vehicle were searched. No illegal items were found.
