Friends, ages 17 & 20, missing after swimming in Unity beach
Two friends, ages 17 and 20, are missing following an afternoon swim at Unity Beach, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Sunday.
The friends, who have been identified as Navin Seenauth and Daniel Boodram, are from Unity Village. According to reports, Seenauth, Boodram, and their friend Joshua Deonarine, 17, also from Unity Village, went swimming at Unity Beach.
Deonarine recounted that the water was inshore upon their arrival, and there were heavy waves. Despite the hazardous conditions, the trio decided to swim.
Deonarine, who could not swim, told police that he had exited the water after approximately half an hour when it reached chest height. Upon getting dressed, he realised his friends were no longer visible in the water.
After a futile search, he returned to the village to raise an alarm. A search party was immediately formed and is ongoing, with active participation from community members.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) is on-site conducting an investigation, and the Coast Guard will be deployed at first light to assist in the search efforts, a statement from the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.
Authorities are urging anyone with information that could assist in locating the missing youths to come forward.
