A 44-year-old sand truck driver was on Thursday sentenced to five years behind bars for causing the death of 45-year-old Nigel Cush, who was killed in an accident on September 15, 2022, at Mandela Avenue and Vlissengen Road.

Aslom Masood of Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was hauled before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

The charge stated that on September 15, 2022, at Mandela Avenue and Vlissengen Road, he drove motor lorry GYY 5875 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Cush, a father of four.

Masood had told Police that as he approached the stop light at Vlissengen Road and Mandela Avenue, which was showing green, Cush jumped the traffic light and into his path.

However, CCTV footage later showed that it was Masood who failed to stop at the traffic light.

Following the collision, the father of four received injuries on his body and was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
