Minister of Health Dr Frank has hailed the COVID-19 vaccination drive as a success as more than 53% of adults and 32% of children have been fully vaccinated after the first dose of vaccine was administered a year ago.

Minister Anthony said,

"I think that’s a really good record that we have set, and I want to express my sincere thanks to the health workers and everyone who has been involved in the vaccination drive programme."

The Ministry of Health has administered 850, 735 doses of vaccine since the Covid-19 vaccination programme commenced on February 11 2021.

The health ministry began its vaccination programme in phases as only health care personnel and elderly persons were identified as beneficiaries.

Minister of Health Dr Frank says the elderly population is leading the vaccination drive as 73.1 per cent of elders are fully vaccinated.

According to the Health Minister, Region Nine has been leading the vaccination drive in terms of the 12 to 17 age cohort. More than 100 per cent of this age group has received the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine and 85.6 per cent are fully immunized.

"They would have given out a lot more than what we have in the population database and that might be because of persons coming over from Brazil and accessing the vaccines,”

he said.

However, vaccination among this age group continues to lag, in Regions Two, Four, Five, Seven and Ten. Meanwhile, the ministry is working along with CARICOM to procure vaccines for children ages 5 to 11.
