"Chike Baba" arraigned for murder of BV man

L-R: Dead: Troy Hicks and Devon Mohamed

A 29-year-old construction worker was on Friday remanded to prison over the murder of 45-year-old Troy Hicks, who was chopped on May 28 at Hendricks Street, Triumph, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Devon Mohamed, also known as "Chike Baba" of Sideline Dam Beterverwagting, ECD, appeared before Magistrate Rochelle Liverpool in the Sparendaam Magistrate's Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge. He was remanded to prison until July 14.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) on the day in question reported that Hicks and the accused had a misunderstanding earlier in the day.

Reports are that Hicks was walking on Hendricks Street when Mohamed chopped him to the head and shoulders.

Hicks, who was armed with a dog chain and cutlass, chopped Mohammed to his forehead. Subsequently, the 45-year-old man then ran into a corner shop after a group of men started to pelt him with bricks.

He also pelted bottles at the men and managed to run north on Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, where the men ran after him. He collapsed shortly after.

He was then picked up alive by the police and escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
