BV man slapped with causing death by dangerous driving charge

Wavell Lamatt, 44, has been slapped with a causing death by dangerous driving charge and released on $100,000 bail.


Lamatt of Beterverwaging, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was hauled before Magistrate Fabayo Azore in the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty to the charge.


The charge stated that on August 15, 2022, on the Lusignan Public Road, ECD, he drove a motorcar dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Prahalad Sawh.


MTV News Update had reported that Sawh was hit by a motorcycle and then by Lamatt, who was driving motorcar PVV 854.


Following the accident, the motorcyclist, who was identified as Leon Lewis, left the scene but was later located by Police at Balwant Singh Hospital.


The motorcar driver had told Police that while proceeding east along the road at a normal rate of speed behind the motorcyclist, he saw someone lying on the roadway, and he pulled north to avoid a collision. Still, despite his effort, he ran over the person.


He then pulled his vehicle to the northern side of the road and stopped to investigate, where he discovered Sawh lying motionless on the road’s surface.
