BV man remanded to prison over ganja, cocaine found in milk tin

Charged: Lionel Mohamed

Sixty-two-year-old Lionel Mohamed, who was busted with marijuana and cocaine concealed in a milk tin, was on Monday remanded to prison.

Mohamed of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arraigned before Magistrate Crystal Lambert in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and was slapped with two counts of trafficking narcotics.

The allegation against Mohamed is that on September 16, 2022, at the Bartica Stelling, he had 948 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

On the same day, at the same location, he is alleged to have had 55 grams of cocaine in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was remanded to prison for statements until October 12, 2022.

Police had reported that ranks went to the Bartica Stelling, where an inbound passenger speedboat was moored.

Thirteen passengers disembarked the speedboat and were instructed to hold their respective properties. At the Stelling, a search was conducted on everyone, including Mohamed.

A search of the miner’s white salt bag in his possession unearthed a 5lbs milk tin with four compressed bulky transparent parcels, all containing a number of leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

A transparent bulky parcel was also found with a whitish rocklike substance suspected to be cocaine. He was told of the rank’s suspicion and cautioned, after which he admitted ownership of the narcotics.
