Body of rice farmer found floating in trench at Mahaicony

Richard Persaud

Police in Region Five are probing the murder of 42-year-old Richard Persaud, a rice farmer called ‘Rasho’ of Wash Clothes Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

According to the Police, at about 17:00h, Persaud, along with a 34-year-old labourer, a 47-year-old rice farmer, and another male, were imbibing at Wash Clothes Mahaicony.

An eyewitness told investigators that at about 21:30h, he saw a 25-year-old rice farmer of Johanna Creek, Mahaicony driving his tractor.

He said the 25-year-old man hit the left side back wheel of motor truck GEE 4715, owned by the deceased 34-year-old friend, which was parked on the western side of Wash Clothes Road.

The tractor driver’s 36-year-old brother was driving behind him in his motorcar.

Following the collision, an argument ensued between the 34-year-old labourer and the 36-year-old suspect. The suspect went into his motor car, collected an object, and stabbed the 36-year-old labourer.

Friends of the Persaud then dealt the suspect several lashes, and he ran into a yard and was pursued.

“It is unclear what transpired after that as the deceased (Richard) was not seen nor he did not return home, and his family began to search for him,” the CCU said.

However, at about 09:00h today, the body of Persaud was seen floating in a trench in front of the 34-year-old’s home at Wash Clothes Mahaicony.

The body was fished out from the trench and was examined by a Police rank, where a stab wound was seen in the middle of his chest and bruises to the left eye.

The body was escorted to the Mahaicony Public Hospital, where it was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
