Blairmont fire was caused by child playing with lighter – probe finds

Investigators are of the view that the fire, which destroyed one flat wooden house located at Lot 135 Blairmont Number 4 Settlement West Bank Berbice (WBB), was caused by a child who was playing with a lighter, which ignited a mattress and spread to the entire building.

The fire, which started at approximately 9:17hrs, destroyed the building, leaving seven persons homeless.

MTV News Update understands that the house is owned by 65-year-old Heeralall Bishunlall.

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said that after being alerted of the fire, Water Tender and crew from the Onverwagt Fire Station were immediately dispatched to the location.

To this end, the GFS urges citizens to take the necessary precautions to avoid these tragedies.

“Make use of fire prevention and firefighting devices such as smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. If these items cannot be afforded or sourced, ensure there is a bucket of sand or adequate water within reach in the event of a fire,” the missive stated.
