A BK International employee has been remanded to prison for the murder of his co-worker.
49-year-old Michael Sooklall was arraigned before Her Worship Chrystal Lambert in the Bartica Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
The charge alleged that on March 30, 2022, in the Mazaruni River, Sooklall murdered 69-year-old Pitamber Sharma.
On March 31, the lifeless body of Sharma, of Independence Street, La Grange, West Bank Demerara (WBD), was fished out of the Mazaruni River.
Police had initially stated that Sharma might have drowned, but a Post Mortem Examination (PME) conducted on his remains gave the cause of death as manual strangulation.
As such, Sooklall was subsequently arrested, and he told detectives that, on the night in question, he and Sharma had a misunderstanding after the deceased accused him of not taking care of the mandir as the caretaker.
Further, it was reported that Sharma then threatened to report the issue to the boss in a move to have Sooklalll replaced.
However, this reportedly triggered the accused, who then strangled the 69-year-old man to death.
After committing the act, this publication understands that the accused dragged the man’s body and threw it into the Mazaruni River.
