Berbice house collapses with occupants during heavy wind


A West Coast Berbice family is contemplating their next move after their two bedrooms, wooden and concrete home collapsed with them inside at about 2:00h on Thursday.


According to 48-year-old Seemangal Baijnauth of Armadale West Coast Berbice, he and his family were in bed when it began to rain heavily.


He said after the rain stopped, a strong wind began blowing causing their home to began shaking.


Seemangal said within minutes, the building collapsed, and he immediately rushed to ensure that his wife and kids were safe. Luckily, no one sustained serious injuries.


Member of Parliament, Faizal Jafarally, Region Five Chairman, Vickchand Ramphal, and Regional Vice Chairman, Rion Peters visited the family and assured them of the government’s support to ensure that their lives returned to some form of normalcy.


Jafarally noted that contact was made with the Office of the Prime Minister and the Civil Defense Commission (CDC), who will assist.


“In the meantime, from my office, we are trying to mobilise some feed stuff and other necessity to assist the family and point in time and we are working closely with the family, and we might be able to restore some level of normalcy to the building in couple days time.”
