Woman, 65, succumbs after being 'squeezed' by garbage truck in Sophia
A 65-year-old woman is now dead after a Puran Brothers Trucking and Disposal Services truck 'squeezed' her in 'B' Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, on Thursday.
The dead woman has been identified as Yvonne Morrison, of 'B' Field, Sophia. The incident occurred at about 11:30h and involved a garbage truck bearing registration number GYY 7351, driven by a 45-year-old man of Leonora Pasture, West Coast Demerara (WCD).
Reports are that Morrison was proceeding west in front of the garbage truck, which was moving in the same direction.
The driver told investigators that while in the process of passing Morrison, he sounded the vehicle horn, and she stopped and allowed the garbage truck to pass.
As the truck proceeded forward, it was alleged that the woman lost her balance and fell onto the roadās surface and under the garbage truck, where the left rear wheel 'squeezed' her.
The porters immediately signaled to the driver to stop, which prevented the rear wheel from crushing the woman.
As a result, the pensioner was picked up in a semi-conscious condition by the driver and the porters and was placed into a motor car and transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was seen by a doctor on duty.
She, however, died at 14:30h while receiving treatment. The body was then escorted to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).
Among other things, the Police said that a notice of intended prosecution was served, and a breathalyser test conducted on the driver showed no trace of alcohol on his breath.
To this end, law enforcement officers said that they are reviewing CCTV footage while the driver is in custody as the probe continues.
