Health Minister to engage residents and Hospital staff on issues

Residents of Linepath, Berbice on Monday raised several concerns they had with the shortcomings of the Skeldon Hospital. The concerns were raised at a community meeting led by Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo.

"I was very sick Monday and I went to Skeldon Hospital to see a doctor and the doctor ordered me two injections and a scan. When I go for the injection no relief I get sick more and then when I go Thursday then me feel good. If you want dead go to Skeldon Hospital."

"I had to take my son on my back walking halfway, however, somebody drop you whatever When I reach to the Hospital there was a blackout, there was no current and my son fall and burst he head and they had to stitch it. The doctors had to go with phones flashing lights. The doctor says until current come and say he not stitching he head till the current come on I say oww doctor if current come on till tomorrow then you go stitch he head?"

Frustrated citizens told the Vice President

The Vice President who listened keenly to the concerns of these residents posited that when he returns to Georgetown officials will have to provide answers on why the healthcare institution was failing to meet certain standards.

"We have managers at these places. What are they doing at these facilities? This is unacceptable rewiring and staff send the report that you sent to Georgetown, I want to see," an engaged Jagdeo told a Regional Health official.

Furthermore, Health Minister, Dr Frank Anthony has been tasked with the responsibility of holding a meeting with the citizens and officials attached to the hospital where possible solutions will be sought.

"Frank Anthony will come. I will send him down and I will tell you all the day and I will let him hold the meeting there...and when I go back to Georgetown they will give me answers to all these issues."

In the meantime, the Vice President has assured that he will do all in his power to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible to all Guyanese. To this end, he reminded us that the construction of a new hospital in Skeldon will commence by the end of the year.

This hospital he explained will provide world-class healthcare services similar to that are being offered in developed countries.
