Venezuelan national found dead in Timehri Prison cell

The lifeless body of a prisoner who was remanded for the possession of stolen articles was found in the Timehri Prison on Saturday.


Dead is 24-year-old Martinez Rajas. A release from the Guyana Prison Service (GPS) said Rajas was a Venezuelan national and was found unresponsive during a security check at 05:20h.


A nurse on duty was immediately summoned, and she confirmed that the inmate was unresponsive.


After that, the police were summoned, and the body was escorted to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre, where the inmate was pronounced dead by a doctor on duty.


Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot said the police and prison authorities are currently investigating. Rajas was remanded to prison on April 28 for possession of stolen articles.
