Teen among 3 arrested after CANU finds $5M worth of ganja in car

Three persons were arrested last Thursday after the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) intercepted a motorcar with $5 million worth of marijuana.

Reports are that CANU conducted an operation on the Springlands Public Road, Corentyne Berbice, during which the officers became suspicious of a silver-grey vehicle parked on the Public Road.

Several individuals within the vicinity were questioned, but no one claimed ownership or identified the vehicle's driver. A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed several parcels of suspected cannabis in two salt bags.

The vehicle and narcotics were escorted to CANU’s Office in Skeldon, Corentyne Berbice.

However, on Friday, Stuart Hamer, 64 years old, a taxi driver of Number 77 Village Housing Scheme, went to Springlands Police Station and claimed ownership of the vehicle.

He also stated that two men hired him to transport the narcotics to Corentyne. As a result, ranks from the Springlands Police Station arrested Jeremiah Smith, 18, and Damion Hinds, 42, who were then turned over to CANU.

The suspected cannabis was weighed and tested in the presence of the three suspects, where it tested positive for cannabis and weighed a total of 40 kilograms.

It had a street value of approximately $5 million. Investigations are ongoing.
