“Sargie” gets life sentences for raping, robbing woman

Ronald Armstrong, also known as “Sargie,” was on Monday handed two life sentences for raping and robbing a 20-year-old woman at gunpoint in 2013.
Armstrong, formerly of Parika, East Bank Essequibo (EBE), was sentenced by Priya Sewnarine-Beharry in the Demerara Sexual Offences Court.
Last month, Armstrong was unanimously found guilty of raping and robbing the 20-year-old woman on January 22, 2013.
During his sentencing hearing, Justice Sewnarine-Beharry handed the convicted rapist two life sentences and ordered that they run concurrently.
The sentences will take effect after Armstrong completes his four-year jail term for an armed robbery committed in 2020.
State Counsels Caressa Henry, Paneeta Persaud, and Cicelia Corbin appeared for the prosecution while Attorney-at-Law Everton Singh-Lammy represented the convicted rapist.
According to media reports, the woman was at home with her baby and sister, who was asleep.
While doing her laundry, the woman felt a cold object on her neck and, upon turning around, came face-to-face with Armstrong, who was armed with a gun and was in the company of two other men.
The court heard that Armstrong began demanding gold from the woman while threatening to injure her baby if she did not comply.
Scared for her life, the woman handed over several pieces of gold jewellery which she was wearing at the time, along with some which were stored in a cabinet.
Notwithstanding his demands being met, Armstrong led the woman into her bedroom, where he ordered her to lie on her bed before raping her.
Armstrong and the two men then escaped with the gold jewellery, the television sets, and laptop computers from the house. Throughout the trial, the convicted rapist professed his innocence.
