A police rank was injured during the violent protest at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on Monday.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that the rank was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital. However, his mother requested that he be transferred to a private institution.

The injured rank, along with other members of the Joint Services, was at the time trying to clear the East Coast roadway, which residents had blocked after a controversial Facebook page posing as a news agency posted that the rank who executed Quindon Bacchus had been released from Police custody.

The scores of protestors blocked the path of commuters with demolished vehicles, tyres, and large pieces of wood, resulting in businesses being forced to close down and commuters returning to their homes. In fact, the protestors robbed vendors of the Mon Repos and Lusignan Markets.

“The road has since been cleared, and members of the Joint Services are on the ground to monitor the roadway to mitigate against any further acts of crime or damage to state property,” the statement said.

To this end, the GPF appeals to persons to avoid “creating further disturbances and breaches to the peace.”
