Pensioner killed, 3 injured after hire car suffers blowout along Long Creek

A 69-year-old woman is now dead, and three others were injured after the hire car in which they were in suffered a blowout, resulting in the car flipping several times before coming to a halt on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway in the vicinity of Long Creek.


Dead is Marva Alder, 69, of Wismar Housing Scheme, while those injured are Simone Barker, 56, Mervyn Mc Andrew, 54, and Joel Mc Andrew, 21. The incident occurred at about 19:00h on Thursday.


According to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the hire car HD 3772 was driven by 40-year-old Keion Hope of Phase 1’B’ Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden.


The CCU reported that the car was proceeding south along the eastern side of the Soesdyke/Linden Highway, and while in the vicinity of Long Creek, the driver alleged that his left-side front wheel blew out, after which he lost control of the vehicle.


The car flipped several times before coming to a halt. Alder was taken out of the vehicle and pronounced dead on the scene.


The three others were taken out of the car and rushed to the Mackenzie Hospital, where they were admitted as patients suffering from various injuries.


Alder’s body was escorted to Carmen’s Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).


A breathalyser test was conducted on the hire car driver, but no trace of alcohol was found. Notwithstanding, an investigation is ongoing.
