Pedal cyclist succumbs following Canje accident

A 52-year-old pedal cyclist succumbed to the injuries he received following an accident on the Canje Public Road on Friday.

Dead is Lakeram Sarjoo of Main Street, Cumberland, East Canje, Berbice. The accident occurred at about 08:10h.

According to the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU), the accident involved Sarjoo and hire car HD 628, owned and driven by a 47-year-old male of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice

Reports are that the hire car HD 628 was proceeding north along the Public Road at a slow rate of speed while the pedal cyclist was proceeding in the opposite direction at an alleged fast rate, swerving between vehicles.

Sarjoo reportedly collided with the right-side front portion of the hire car and fell onto the road’s surface, where he received bodily injuries.

He was picked up by the hire car driver in a semi-conscious condition and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured jaw and leg.

He was later admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit, where he succumbed while receiving further treatment.

The hire car driver was arrested at the hospital and escorted to Central Police Station, where a breathalyser test showed no alcohol in his system. Investigations are ongoing.
