Nine generators, forklift among items destroyed in fire at DDL Power Plant

The fire, which broke out at DDL Power Plant on Friday

The fire, which broke out at the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) Power Plant in Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara (EBD) on Friday, destroyed several valuable items, including nine Caterpillar generators, a forklift, and twenty-three drums of castor oil.

The blaze started at around 16:43 h and prompted a swift response from the Guyana Fire Service (GPF).

The Fire Service said in a statement that six firefighting units from West Ruimveldt, Eccles/Diamond, and Campbellville stations were dispatched to the scene and arrived within seven minutes.

Under the leadership of Chief Fire Officer Gregory Wickham, a team of 28 firefighters worked to contain the fire in a single building.

The fire, which originated in the generator enclosure, damaged the nine transformers and spread to a nearby chemical bond, damaging 5 meters of wooden ceiling and seven meters of metal guttering.

“Firefighters used foam, dry chemicals, and water to extinguish the blaze, deploying five jets from multiple water carriers and tenders. Thanks to their efforts, the chemical bond and fuel storage areas were protected from further damage,” the Fire Service noted.

While the cause of the fire is currently under investigation, the Fire Service praised the firefighting team for their professionalism, noting that their quick action helped avert what could have been a much more catastrophic event.
