National athlete critical following accident on Mandela Avenue

National Volleyball player Kristoff Shepherd Kristoff Shepherd of Now-or-Never, Mahaicony Village, East Coast Demerara is currently hospitalised and in a serious condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital, following an accident on Monday. Police said the accident which involved a car and motor lorry occurred around twenty-one hours at the intersection of Nelson Mandela and Homestretch Avenue. Shepherd was driving the motor car along with two passengers, Chelsea Edghill and Nickasie Lewis.


According to the Police, the motor lorry was proceeding north along the western carriage way of Nelson Mandela Avenue, while the motorcar was proceeding east along the northern drive lane of Homestretch Avenue when the accident occurred. Shepherd was attempting a right turn when he ended up into the path of the lorry causing both vehicles to be damaged. Shepherd along with Edghill and Lewis were removed from the vehicle in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.


Edghill and Lewis were treated and sent away while Shepherd remains a patient at the GPHC. A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver of the motor lorry and no trace of alcohol was found in his system.


The motor lorry driver remains in custody assisting with the investigations.
