Mother who fed her 4-year-old daughter poison remanded

Charged: Niladave Shamsundar

A 23-year-old woman, who Police said confessed to feeding her 4-year-old daughter poison, was on Friday remanded to prison.

Niladave Shamsundar, called ‘Tasha’ of Lot 1 No. 50 Village, Corentyne, was hauled before Magistrate Alex Moore in the Number 51 Magistrate’s Court.

She was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which stated that on October 2, 2022, at Lot 1 No. 50 Village, Corentyne, she attempted to murder Tinesha Shamshundar.

The Magistrate remanded the 23-year-old mother and adjourned the matter to December 9, 2022.

Initially, the woman told Police that she concealed a bottle of poison in a goat pen, and her daughter, who was playing in the yard, found it and consumed its contents.

But as questions mounted about how a four-year-old managed to uncover the bottle containing the poison, Niladave told investigators that she was the one who fed the child.

This was noted after an argument between her and her child’s father, who dealt her several lashes about the body. Notwithstanding, the four-year-old girl is in a stable condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
