Miner, 64, dies after mining pit collapses at Region 8

Dead: Donald Gouveia

A miner was on Monday killed after the mining pit in which he was working collapsed at Micobie Backdam, Region Eight.

The dead man has been identified as 64-year-old Donald Gouveia called ‘Danny’ of Subryanville, Georgetown. The incident occurred at about 12:00h.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that Gouveia and three other workers were working in a mining pit made up of sandy soil. It was noted that the pit is about 60 feet in diameter and 70 feet in depth.

“The portion of the pit wall that caved in had covered 15-feet of the depth. At the time Donald was jetting, when the western pit wall collapsed and caved in, and in the process covered him,” the Police said.

According to the GPF, Gouveia’s co-workers were partly covered, namely: Keith James (above his waist), Frencivaldo Santos (above his chest area), and Junior Daniels (just above his knees).

They were assisted by other workers and managed to free themselves without any injury.

However, the 64-year-old man was taken out of the pit unconscious and was rushed to Micobie Health Center but was referred to the Mahdia District Hospital.

On his arrival at the hospital, he was examined and was pronounced dead on arrival.

Gouveia’s body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME). The investigation is in progress.
