Miner, 23, dies in mining pit accident at Region Seven
A mining pit accident, which occurred on Sunday at Sand Hill Backdam in Region Seven, has resulted in the death of a 23-year-old miner.
Dead is Akeem Khan, also known as "Mango Man," of Lot 37 Old Housing Scheme, Bartica. The incident occurred at about 16:30h.
MTV News Update understands that Khan was the owner of a mining operation at Sand Hill.
A report by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that the 23-year-old man and his employee were jetting in his mining pit when the wall started to cave in.
Khan and his employee reportedly began to run, but his feet caught in the jetting hose, and the sand covered him.
The employee raised an alarm, and another man came to his rescue. They began digging for the victim, and after 10 minutes, his body was found motionless. A report was made to the Bartica Police Station, and an investigation was launched.
