A medical student was in the wee hours of this morning robbed at gunpoint of a silver-grey Allion, an iPhone 7, and $40,000 in cash in the vicinity of Ascension Primary School, Ice House Road, West Ruimveldt.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Ikechukwu Otiko of New Housing Scheme Lodge. Otiko, a medical student of Rajiv Gandhi University of Science and Technology, was robbed at about 00:30h by three identifiable gun-toting men.

Investigations revealed that the victim was working as a taxi driver and, at about midnight, he picked up a male at the Survival Supermarket located on Sheriff Street, who requested to be taken to Ice House Road, West Ruimveldt.

On arrival at the location, Otiko stopped the motor car and was confronted by the two other men, who came on foot from an unknown location.

They pointed guns at the driver and demanded that he exit his car. A scuffle ensued between the victim and the perpetrators. One of the perpetrators dealt him several lashes in the face with his handgun.

The trio managed to get the victim out of the car, where they entered and made good their escape. Otiko’s phone and money were in the vehicle at the escape time.

The matter was reported to the police, and investigators are reviewing CCTV footage as the investigations continue.
