The East Canje Berbice man who is accused of brutally stabbing his ex-wife to death on Monday last was remanded to prison when he appeared virtually in the Springlands Magistrate Court earlier today.

Baburam Gunpat was not required to plea to the charge when it was read to him by magistrate Alex Moore.

The allegation is that on August 08, 2022, the accused left his East Canje Berbice home and traveled to No. 47 village on the Corentyne where the victim, 24-year-old, Padminie Cindy Ramchandar was staying with family. Upon seeing the woman on an electric scooter, he pulled out a knife and launched a brutal attack on the woman, killing her on the spot.

The woman was picked up and taken to the Skeldon Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. The suspect then went into biding for almost four days before turning himself in with an attorney. He was immediately taken into custody.

Aunt of the deceased, Anita Tribhowan had told MTV News Update that the man had made several threats toward her niece and even attacked her before and slash her hand with a knife. She said that matter was reported to the police but nothing came out of it.

MTV News Update understands that the deceased moved out of the home she once shared with the man after he refused to allow her to associate with relatives and friends. It was when the mother of the deceased was leaving the country to go overseas, that the suspect refused to allow her to follow her to the airport and told her that she should leave with her belongings if she only follow her mother to the airport.

Following his appearance, the accused was ordered to return to court on November 02, 2022.
