Man succumbs weeks after being set ablaze by child’s mother

Edmond Moses

Edmond Moses, a 32-year-old taxi driver who was set on fire by the mother of his child, has succumbed to his injuries weeks after the harrowing incident.

Moses, of New Market Street, South Cummingsburg, passed away at the Georgetown Public Hospital on Thursday, where he had been receiving treatment. He was set on fire on May 22, 2024, at New Market Street, Georgetown.

It was reported that on the day in question, Moses checked his wallet and discovered $18,000 missing. He then asked his child’s mother if she had taken the money.

She reportedly said no, and a heated argument ensued between the two. During the quarrel, the accused, who had a plastic container with a liquid substance suspected to be gasoline, threw it on Moses and set him on fire.

The victim began rolling on the ground, and when the fire was extinguished, he was assisted to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was admitted.

Following the incident, the accused, Melissa David, was hauled before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and charged with attempted murder.

However, the 24-year-old woman had a different account of what transpired during her first court appearance. She claimed the argument started while cleaning when she asked Moses to buy Ensure and juice for their son.

She said Moses told her to get them herself and left the apartment. He returned around 18:30h, demanding his wallet.

According to David, when she informed him, she had found it, Moses punched her in the eye and began choking her. She pretended to pass out, only for Moses to punch her in the stomach and kick her.

David further alleged that Moses threatened her with a knife, prevented her from leaving the room, and took her phone.

Fearing for her life, she said she acted in self-defence by setting him on fire. She claimed the abuse had been ongoing for two years and that previous reports to the police had not resulted in any action.

While she was assigned counsel from the Legal Aid Clinic, it is unclear if she was granted bail at her last court date, which was June 7.
