Local Gov't Ministry and M&CC closer to approving by-pass legislation

Following the Mayor and City Council's written request in January to the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development for the approval of an anti littering by-pass law the two parties are now closer to agreeing on the law.

This was revealed by City Mayor Ubraj Narine on Friday at a media briefing.

Mr. Narine noted that the Local Government Ministry in written response dated the 3rd February proposed that

"fines stipulated under 71 a and b are to be paid to the city within 72 hours the changes was three business day from the notice given ,every notice or ticket referred to sub section 41 should identify the property and the address to the owner's power of attorney".

The council has since approved for those areas to be amended and has since forwarded the document back to the Ministry and awaits the final approval from subject Minister Nigel Dharamlall.

Once approved litterbugs charged for first offence will be subjected to pay a fine of $10,000,second offence $20,000 and third offence not less than $35,000 but not exceeding $500,000.
