Inter-District Schools Kayaking (Nationals) Competition set for July


Elite Kayaking and Nature Tours will be hosting their Inaugural Inter-District Schools Kayaking competition’ as part of the Linden RiverFront Festival.


The first-ever Kayaking Nationals will see more than 100 students go neck and neck kayaking in the Watooka riverfront on Monday July 4, with the award ceremony following at the conclusion of the event.


On May 2, the first ever Inter schools kayaking competition was hosted in Linden among all the secondary schools in region 10 with two top guest schools from Georgetown. The Nationals follow on from the success of this.


The competition will feature students from every district in Guyana competing for a grand prize across four categories; the male and female Kayaking Races, and male and female relay races. Both categories of relay races feature 400m sprint and 1600m kayaking.


The 15 competing districts are; North West, Rupununi, Essequibo Coast/ Pomeroon, West Demerara, East Coast Demerara, West Coast Berbice, Corentyne, Bartica, Potaro/ Siparuni, Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani, North Georgetown, East Georgetown, South Georgetown, East Bank Demerara and New Amsterdam.


Each district is invited to field a 7-member team of students grade 10 or higher accompanied by two teachers.


Safety will be prioritised with a medical evacuation team and first responders present and lifejackets to be worn by all participants.


The Water Ambulance with a medical team will be in the water at all times alongside the participants and lifeguards will be on jet skis alongside the participants, alert and ready to render assistance –should it be required.
