“I am very sorry,” says farmer who chopped wife for having an abortion
A 44-year-old father of six who had brutally chopped his reputed wife for having an abortion was on Thursday sentenced to 10 years behind bars.
Fazil Osman, also a farmer of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was sentenced by Justice Jo Ann Barlow in the Demerara High Court.
Last month, Osman admitted that on February 24, 2019, he had unlawfully and maliciously wounded the 24-year-old woman with the intent to commit murder.
During his sentencing hearing, a remorseful Osman said, “I am very sorry for what happened.”
Media reports are that the mother of two was attacked and chopped after she had made a report at the Mahaica Police Station that Osman was abusing her.
The investigating rank told the woman to return home to Osman to pick up her clothes and serve a restraining order.
In the company of a Rural Constable, the woman returned home, and the 44-year-old attacked the woman and chopped her with a cutlass in front of the Constable.
State Counsel Latifah Elliot presented the prosecution’s case while Attorney-at-Law Teriq Mohammed represented the Osman.
